WASHINGTON - While the United Food and Commercial Workers has not joined other unions such as the Service Employees International Union and the AFL-CIO in officially supporting the Occupy Wall Street protests taking place in New York and other U.S. cities, the UFCW nonetheless “stands in solidarity with anyone who is standing up to corporate greed and the growing income gap,” Nicky Coolberth, the UFCW’s assistant director - communications, told SN.

“The people ‘occupying’ the cities and towns across the country are looking for the same things union members have always fought for — good, decent, middle-class jobs — the kind that actually allow you to raise your kids and get ahead,” Coolberth said. “And for a return to basic fairness in an economy that's gone out of whack.”

The Occupy Wall Street movement began in New York a month ago to protest economic inequality, corporate greed and the influence of the financial industry over government. Last week, SEIU members and other unions participated in a march in Minneapolis to call on banks to end foreclosures, while AFL-CIO members showed up at similar protests in Boston and St. Louis, according to reports.
