Union Denounces Latest Offer in Denver

The union representing workers at Safeway and King Soopers stores in Colorado was critical of a "final offer" made this week by retailers.

DENVER — The union representing workers at Safeway and King Soopers stores in Colorado was critical of a "final offer" made this week by retailers.

The employers, however, said the new offer expands health care coverage, increases wages and stabilizes pensions. In a statement, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 here said the offer is "virtually identical" to one that more than 90% of its members voted down previously.

The sides have been negotiating to replace a contract that expired in May.

In a message to employees, King Soopers' parent, Cincinnati-based Kroger Co., said, "This is a very good offer, especially in light of today's difficult economy and the tough competitors we face."
