U.S. Growth Drives Delhaize Sales Gains in 2006

BRUSSELS -- Delhaize Group here said yesterday that its year-over-year comparable-store sales in the United States were up 2.2% in the fourth quarter and 2.7% for all of 2006, led by strong performances at Food Lion and Hannaford Bros.

BRUSSELS -- Delhaize Group here said yesterday that its year-over-year comparable-store sales in the United States were up 2.2% in the fourth quarter and 2.7% for all of 2006, led by strong performances at Food Lion and Hannaford Bros. The company, which only released top-line results, said it had overall sales growth of 5.5% at identical exchange rates, to about $24.85 billion. The results were at the high end of the company‘s own projections, but fell below what some analysts anticipated, according to reports. In the fourth quarter, total company sales were up 4.6% at identical exchange rates. Separately, Delhaize said Nicolas Hollanders, 44, has been named executive vice president of human resources and organizational development. He will assume the organizational development function of Joyce Wilson-Sanford, executive vice president of strategic organizational development and learning, who plans to retire July 1, and the human resources responsibility of Michael Waller, executive vice president, human resources, general counsel and general secretary. Hollanders most recently was with executive search firm Egon Zehnder International.
