Wal-Mart Monthly Sales Below Mark; Target Sales Climb

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart here on Thursday reported comparable-store sales of 0.9% during the February reporting period, slightly below the company's prior forecast of 1%-2% gains.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart here on Thursday reported comparable-store sales of 0.9% during the February reporting period, slightly below the company‘s prior forecast of 1%-2% gains. Comps in its Wal-Mart Stores division increased by 0.4%, with food, pharmacy and consumables performing above average, and apparel and hard goods seeing soft results, the retailer said. Target Corp., Wal-Mart‘s Minneapolis-based rival, said its comparable-store sales improved by 5.7% during the month, which the retailer said was in line with expectations. Other retailers reporting monthly sales Thursday included Costco, Issaquah, Wash., which recorded a 4% same-store sales gain, below its 5.4% forecast.
