BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here announced that Margaret A. McKenna has been named president of the Wal-Mart Foundation, which manages corporate giving. She joins Wal-Mart after a long career in the public and nonprofit sectors, most recently as the president for two decades of Lesley University, Cambridge, Mass. During her tenure there, McKenna led the transformation of the institution from a small college with 2,000 students to a 12,000-student university with a national presence, while the university’s endowment increased from $2 million to more than $90 million. Prior to her role at Lesley, McKenna served as vice president of Radcliffe College, Cambridge (now Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University), as deputy counsel in the White House and as a civil rights lawyer at the U.S. Department of Justice. At the Wal-Mart Foundation, McKenna will oversee an effort that last year gave more than $270 million to support 4,000-plus U.S.-based communities.
