Weis Completes Purchase of 3 Genuardi’s

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets here said that it expected to complete its purchase of three Pennsylvania Genuardi’s stores Monday, and that the locations would reopen under the Weis banner later this week.

The stores, located in Conshohocken, Doylestown and East Norristown, closed over the weekend and will reopen Saturday, Weis said. To staff these stores, Weis Markets has hired 218 former Genuardi employees and has added 150 positions, which will allow each store to double the number of cashiers it employs and increase front-end service.

McCaffery’s to Buy Genuardi’s Store Under FTC Review

Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway also has an agreement to sell 16 Genuardi's locations to Ahold's Giant-Carlisle chain. Last week local independent McCaffery's Supermarkets said it was buying one those 16 locations to ease Federal Trade Commission concerns over the acquisition.

Newtown is the only Genuardi location which the FTC vetoed Ahold from acquiring; more than two miles from the nearest Giant. Interesting in that Springfield Genuardi's is only a little over one mile from Super Giant Springfield, that opened less than two years ago. There were many comments conveyed to FTC by Springfield residents, but the FTC only paid attention to Newtown??
