Whole Foods Said to Eye Foodmaster

CHELSEA, Mass. — Whole Food Market is in talks to acquire six supermarkets in the Boston area from Johnny’s Foodmaster, based here, according to reports.

Neither Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods nor Foodmaster could be reached for comment.

According to the Boston Globe, the natural and organic specialist has been in discussions to buy Foodmaster locations in Arlington, Brookline, Charlestown, Melrose, South Weymouth and Somerville, Mass. Foodmaster currently operates 10 stores in the region.

Whole Foods had previously expanded in the area through the acquisition of the Bread & Circus chain.

The Beacon Street Somerville location seems more likely since the other Somerville location is very close to the Medford Whole Foods location...

Local reports indicate that it is the Beacon Street location in Somerville that Whole Foods is interested in.

Hannaford may have been a better suitor for some of those locations... Whole Foods probably kept Foodmaster's contact info for future reference after they got their Swampscott, MA location...
