Winn-Dixie Posts Profit, Sales Gains

Winn-Dixie Stores yesterday reported second-quarter results that it described as “stronger than expected,” with net income of about $4.1 million, compared with $286,793 in the year-ago period.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores here yesterday reported second-quarter results that it described as “stronger than expected,” with net income of about $4.1 million, compared with $286.8 million in the year-ago period following a one-time gain after emerging from bankruptcy. Sales for the 16-week second quarter, which ended Jan. 9, were up 0.7%, to $2.2 billion, including same-store sales gains of 0.5%. For the 28-week first half, net income as $3.3 million, compared with $262 million in the year-ago first half. Sales for the half were $3.9 billion, an increase of 0.7%, including same-store sales gains of 0.4%. Peter Lynch, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said the company “improved profitability by effectively managing promotional spending, while simultaneously growing identical-store sales.”
