Target launches Express Self-Checkout

Retailer will roll out a new approach at certain stores on March 17

After listening to shopper feedback, Target is making some changes to the checkout line.

Beginning March 17, the Minneapolis-based retailer will introduce Express Self-Checkout for 10 items or less at almost 2,000 stores. Prior to this, there was no limit at self-checkout.

Target will also open more traditional checkout lanes, and store leaders will have the flexibility to open more staffed lanes and set self-checkout hours that accommodate the needs of each store. The company said Express Self-Checkout will be available during the busiest shopping times.

Target was able to test its Express Self-Checkout in about 200 stores last fall and found it was twice as fast as normal self-checkout.

However, during the retailer’s recent third quarter earnings call, Target COO John Mulligan said the company has seen the use of its full-service checkout increase by six percentage points, since the company’s investment in its frontend experience with an increase in staff.
