Wal-Mart Demonstrators Arrested

LOS ANGELES  — In what organizers are calling "the largest-ever act of civil disobedience against Walmart," 54 Wal-Mart Stores employees and community sympathizers were arrested Thursday after a sit-down in front of a store here protesting low wages and alleged retaliation against employees who question the company's policies.

The employee walkout and subsequent sit-in was organized by OUR Walmart — Organization United for Respect — an advocacy group with ties to the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

"Wal-Mart has proven its willingness to break the law by illegally firing workers and trying to silence them,” said Maria Elena Durazo, executive secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and one of those arrested. “We are sitting down to demonstrate that we won't allow these dirty tactics in Los Angeles."
