EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market announced plans yesterday to open a store in a new mixed-use center in gritty South Los Angeles — a location some community groups had been urging the chain to consider since it began opening stores in Southern California last November. Groundbreaking at the site, at the intersection of Central Avenue and Adams Boulevard, is scheduled for later this month, the company said. Combined with the opening of a Fresh & Easy in Compton earlier this year, “this announcement again demonstrates our commitment to open stores in all types of neighborhoods, including those that have been traditionally underserved,” Tim Mason, chief executive officer of Fresh & Easy, said yesterday during remarks at the opening of its 62nd store, in Manhattan Beach — located about a mile from the chain’s U.S. headquarters here. Fresh & Easy is the U.S. division of United Kingdom-based Tesco.
