Independent Supermarkets See Margin Gains

ARLINGTON, Va. — Independent supermarkets increased their net profit before taxes by 76 basis points, to 1.52%, in the most recent year, according to a survey released yesterday by the National Grocers Association here and financial services company FMS Inc., Pasadena, Md. The 2008 Independent Operators Survey found that single-store operators had the biggest gains, while multi-store operators “fell below their high of 2.44%” in the year-ago report. The report also found that independents were in favor of tax incentives to reward environmentally friendly business practices — 22% said they would like to see such incentives, ranking second behind overall corporate tax reductions on respondents’ wish list for tax reforms.
