BETHPAGE, N.Y. — King Kullen Grocery Co. here is poised to take over four Waldbaums stores and one Pathmark site in the New York borough of Staten Island as a result of antitrust requirements in A&P’s pending takeover of Pathmark, sources told SN. Montvale, N.J.-based A&P, which operates Waldbaums, and Pathmark, Carteret, N.J., are expected to finalize their merger as soon as next week. Sources, including local labor representatives and industry observers, told SN they are anticipating fewer Federal Trade Commission-mandated divestitures than earlier estimates, which were pegged as high as 30 stores. In addition to the Staten Island locations, a Long Island Waldbaums store in Shirley, N.Y., may be sold to Stop & Shop, one source said. Officials from A&P and King Kullen were not immediately available for comment.
