TORONTO — United Food and Commercial Workers local unions in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta have threatened to strike as early as Saturday unless progress is made in their respective negotiations with Loblaw, UFCW Canada said Thursday. Local 1400 workers at Loblaw-banner stores in Saskatchewan said they could walk off the job Saturday unless an agreement was reached by Thursday’s late deadline. In Alberta, Local 401 said a strike at Loblaw-bannered stores would begin Monday in Edmonton and Tuesday in Calgary. Workers reached a tentative deal last week in Manitoba, the union said, but that deal still requires ratification from members of Local 832. The negotiations cover workers at Real Canadian Superstore, Extra Foods and Real Canadian Warehouse Club stores operated by the Toronto-based retailer.
