Safeway Leans In Sandberg’s Direction

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway has partnered with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” initiative.

“Safeway is ‘leaning in’ because we believe in empowering employees and advancing their leadership growth and capabilities,” Russ Jackson, Safeway’s senior vice president, human resources, said in a statement on the leanin.org website. “We are continuously exploring innovative resources and development tools to help grow future women leaders in an increasingly competitive environment.”

The Lean In movement is an effort to help women advance in government and industry. In her new book, "Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead,” Sandberg stresses that — at a time when men still hold the vast majority of leadership positions in government and industry — women need to seek challenges, take risks and pursue their goals more aggressively. The Lean In movement encourages companies to create “Lean In” circles, small groups that meet regularly to share and learn together.
