Spartan Wins Chief Supply Deal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Spartan Stores here on Tuesday said it has entered a distribution agreement with Chief Super Market, a 12-store independent based in Defiance, Ohio.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Spartan Stores here on Tuesday said it has entered a distribution agreement with Chief Super Market, a 12-store independent based in Defiance, Ohio.

Chief operates 12 stores under the Chief Supermarkets and Rays banners in Northwest and West Central Ohio. Spartan said it will assume distribution to all of Chief’s banners for grocery, dairy, frozen, bakery and other products in March. The stores are currently supplied by Supervalu, Minneapolis.

“Chief is known for having strong grocery selections and well-merchandised stores and we look forward to supporting their continued success with our broad selection of private brand and national brand products, as well as value-added services,” Dennis Eidson, Spartan Stores’ chief executive officer, said in a statement. “We are also very excited about our expansion into Ohio as securing new business in contiguous states is one of our key strategic business growth initiatives.”
