90,000-square-foot ShopRite to anchor N.J. center

Village Super Market has signed a lease for a 90,000-square-foot store to anchor a new mixed-use development in Old Bridge, N.J., sources told SN.

Construction of the new store is set to begin shortly, developer Brunetti Organization said, with plans to open the store next summer. The announcement of the ShopRite lease is expected to spur finalization of lease negotiations with several additional retail tenants, Brunetti added.

When completed, The Oaks at Glenwood development will feature 2,000 residential units and more than 500,000 square feet of retail space. It is located at Route 9 S. and Schulmeister Road in Middlesex County.

Village Super Market currently operates a 40,000-square-foot ShopRite store about a mile south of the new center, which it acquired in 2012.

The Springfield, N.J.-based company has previously built replacement superstores in Morristown, Stirling, and Union, N.J. Village said larger store sizes enable a “one-stop” shopping experience featuring higher margin specialty departments such as an on-site bakery and expanded deli, natural and organic foods, ethnic and international foods, prepared foods and pharmacies and a convenience "Power Alley" of prepared foods to take home.

The Morristown, Union and Stirling stores include the Village Food Garden, a restaurant style kitchen, and several kiosks offering a wide variety of store prepared specialty foods for both take-home and in-store dining.
