Save-A-Lot Opens N.C. Warehouse

LEXINGTON, N.C. — Save-A-Lot is scheduled to open a new, 330,000-square-foot distribution center here on Wednesday, which it said would support expansion plans in North Carolina and neighboring states.

St. Louis-based Save-A-Lot, a division of Supervalu, Minneapolis, said the DC would initially serve 70-plus stores within a 150-mile radius. The chain currently has 30 stores in North Carolina and plans another three openings in the state by March 2012, as it seeks to add more than 1,000 stores nationwide over the next few years.

The project is the result of collaboration with the state of North Carolina and its One North Carolina Fund, the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Davidson County and the City of Lexington.

"This project represents an investment of more than $24 million in North Carolina," said John Gerber, Save-A-Lot vice president of distribution, in a statement. "We are committed to growth in the region. We completed construction ahead of schedule and are thrilled to now be able to begin serving our Save-A-Lot stores throughout the area."

Construction on the facility, which includes several energy-saving technologies, began in January. It will initially employ 35 workers.
