NEW YORK — Internet grocer FreshDirect here has told customers it will reduce emissions from its delivery trucks by using alternative fuels, and reduce waste by eliminating most cardboard delivery boxes, as part of a plan to be better environmental stewards. In an email to customers last week, FreshDirect said it would initiate biodiesel use in all of its delivery trucks by 2008 through a partnership with alternative energy firm Tri-State Biodiesel. Tri-State uses cooking oil donated from FreshDirect kitchens for use in non-toxic fuel. The retailer also said it was working with city officials to identify locations to install electrical outlets that its refrigerated vehicles could plug into. FreshDirect also said it would phase out use of nearly all cardboard delivery boxes in favor of recyclable plastic totes and grocery bags over the next three years.
