NGA’s Zaucha: Use Investment Incentives to Upgrade POS Equipment

ARLINGTON, Va. — Tom Zaucha, president and chief executive officer of the National Grocers Association here, suggested that independent retailers use the investment incentives that will result from the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 signed into law last week to upgrade their POS technology. “Grocers can take advantage of these incentives by upgrading their point-of-sale equipment and systems so they are prepared for the switch from the Universal Product Code to the GS1 DataBar in 2010,” said Zaucha in a statement. The GS1 DataBar was developed by GS1 US in response to the industry’s interest and need for bar code symbols that can carry more data in less space than the UPC. “Many systems installed since 2002 have the capability to scan and process GS1 DataBar symbols, but older systems may need to be upgraded to support the new symbology,” he said. The stimulus bill allocates $45 billion in investment incentives for any equipment bought after Dec. 31, 2007 and placed into service during 2008.
