QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop here announced Friday that it has been named, along with sister Ahold USA company Giant Food, Landover, Md., an Energy Star Leader by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of the superior energy performance of their supermarkets. The two chains, which together operate more than 575 stores, use about 40% less energy than average supermarkets, Stop & Shop said. Stop & Shop/Giant Food is one of only a few supermarket chains across the U.S. to achieve recognition by EPA as an Energy Star Leader. “We are extremely proud of our energy conservation initiatives,” said Ruth Kinzey, senior vice president for Giant and Stop & Shop, in a statement. “We are fully committed to finding solutions that will protect the environment today and for generations to come.”
