Ahold USA Cited for Green Power Usage

CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold USA announced that has again been named to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) list of the largest green power purchasers.  

As of the October 2012 ranking, the company is listed No. 8 on the EPA’s Top 20 Retail list and No. 29 on the National Top 50 list for purchasing more than 149 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually.  Ahold USA buys renewable energy certificates (RECs) from 3Degrees and also generates green power from its on-site renewable energy systems.

“From our stores and distribution centers down to our corporate support offices, Ahold USA has a strong focus on greener efforts and reducing our carbon footprint as demonstrated by this recent EPA ranking,” said Jihad Rizkallah, vice president of corporate responsibility and sustainability for Ahold USA, in a statement. “We continue to help our retail divisions make existing stores more energy efficient by utilizing various solutions to reduce energy consumption, conserve water, and reduce the environmental impact of operations.”

Since 2008, Ahold USA has been developing its renewable and clean energy portfolio, which includes roof-mounted solar photovoltaic systems at 25 Stop & Shop and Giant Food stores and a fuel cell project at a Stop & Shop in Torrington, Conn., which consumes natural gas to produce electricity and waste heat.
