Co-op Cites Suppliers’ Green Practices

SEATTLE — In anticipation of Earth Day April 22, PCC Natural Markets, a nine-store natural and organic food cooperative here, highlighted four suppliers on its website that excel in sustainable practices.

The four companies are: R.W. Knudsen Family and Santa Cruz Organic; Nature's Path Organic; Earth Friendly Products; and Wild Carrot Herbals.

R.W. Knudsen Family and Santa Cruz Organic was cited for running a distribution facility in California that earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2010.

Based in Richmond, B.C., Nature's Path, together with PCC, “was one of the first companies to sign the Declaration of Sustainability, an 11-point action plan created by the Sustainable Food Trade to move the organic food trade toward more sustainable business models,” said PCC on its website.

Illinois-based Earth Friendly Products helps “ease our minds with power-packed laundry detergent, dish soap and other cleaning products that are free of toxins, petrochemicals, bleach, ammonia, phosphates and other harmful ingredients,” the site said.

Wild Carrot Herbals, Rickreall, Ore., “grows many of the botanical ingredients used in [its] plant-based products on [its] three-acre family farm,” the site said. “Other ingredients are wildcrafted from the surrounding area, and when [owner Jody] Berry has to source ingredients elsewhere, she chooses local and fair trade.”
