Report: Senator Accuses Whole Foods of Harming Fishermen With Seafood Policy

BOSTON — U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., reportedly wrote John Mackey and Walter Robb, co-chief executive officers of Whole Foods Market, to ask them to change the retailer’s newly adopted seafood sustainability policy, according to an Associated Press report.

Starting Earth Day, the retailer pledged to eliminate “red” rated seafood, deemed overfished or not sustainably sourced by the Blue Ocean Institute or Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The AP reported that Brown’s letter “questioned what he called ‘uncertain science.’” In addition, the report noted that Brown believed Whole Foods’ policy was made in desire for Whole Foods to be politically correct, and that he believed the policy will be harmful to Massachusetts fishermen.
