Catalina Acquires Ahold USA’s Mobile Provider
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Catalina Marketing Corp., which supplies targeted coupon printing machines at the checkouts of thousands of supermarkets, announced that is has completed its acquisition of11-year-old Modiv Media, Quincy, Mass., known for providing the Scan It! scan-and-bag handheld and mobile app system used by Ahold USA's Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover division.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Catalina Marketing Corp., which supplies targeted coupon printing machines at the checkouts of thousands of supermarkets, announced that is has completed its acquisition of11-year-old Modiv Media, Quincy, Mass., known for providing the Scan It! scan-and-bag handheld and mobile app system used by Ahold USA's Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover division.
Terms of the acquisition were not released.
The Scan It! handheld system is in 351 Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover stores (270 Stop & Shop and 81 Giant-Landover); the mobile app has been made available to 110 Stop & Shop stores in its New England division (Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut), with plans to roll it out to all 351 stores with the handheld system by the end of the summer, according to Ahold USA.

Shoppers using either the handheld or mobile app can scan items prior to checking out while receiving targeted offers based on shopping history and store activity.
"Modiv has spent the last several years building in-store mobile solutions from the ground up, engineering for a very complex environment," said Jamie Egasti, chief executive officer, Catalina Marketing, in a statement. "Today, they have the only mobile commerce solution designed to meet the demands of high-frequency retail. From comprehensive integration with POS systems to leveraging loyalty and CRM to influence behavior, this solution integrates perfectly with Catalina and will change how retailers and brands engage and empower consumers."
Modiv’s employees will remain in the Boston area. The company is currently evaluating a new office location in Boston's Innovation District to support expansion plans. Modiv will be renamed Catalina Mobile.
