LIGHTING UP SAFETY

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Consumers can use the same safety light technology that firefighters, police and other public safety officials use with new SnapLights from Cyalume Technologies here. Based on the chemistry of a firefly, the technology was first developed in the 1960s to keep American military forces safe during the Cold War, the company said. SnapLights are packaged in home and roadside emergency light kits. “It's a good item to have in case of emergency,” said Big Y general merchandise category manager Scott Miller. “Flashlight batteries die pretty quickly; flares are too dangerous.” Cyalume is planning coverage on television networks and in newspapers and magazines.
