MINNEAPOLIS — A Cub Foods store in St. Paul, Minn., operated by Supervalu here, will be the first supermarket to receive Gold-Level Certification for its advanced refrigeration technology from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership. The announcement was made yesterday by Keilly Witman, communication specialist in the EPA’s Stratospheric Protection Division, during a webinar, “How GreenChill is Helping Retailers and the Environment,” hosted by SN and sponsored by Bohn (Heatcraft Refrigeration Products) and Hill-Phoenix. The store will be recognized by EPA in a ceremony at the end of October. Among its qualifications for certification, the Cub store had a refrigerant charge of less than 1.25 pounds of refrigerant per 1,000 BTUs per hour of total evaporator cooling load; used refrigerants with zero ozone-depleting potential; and used refrigerants that have been found acceptable by EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy Program (SNAP).
