LAS VEGAS — Wal-Mart Stores, Bentonville, Ark., this week opened a second-generation, high-efficiency (HE.2) supercenter here that is designed to use 25% less energy than a conventional supercenter and reduces the carbon footprint by 75%. This is one of five such supercenters Wal-Mart is opening around the U.S. The store includes a medium-temperature secondary loop refrigeration system from Hill Phoenix, Conyers, Ga., that reduces refrigerant charge in this store by 90% compared to a conventional Wal-Mart store. “We’ve learned a lot since we opened our first HE.1 store one year ago and we are excited to put what we have learned into practice with the HE.2,” said Charles Zimmerman, vice president of prototype and new format development at Wal-Mart, in a statement.
