WASHINGTON — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Stratospheric Protection Division said yesterday that it has signed up four new members for its GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership with the supermarket industry. These include three providers of chemical refrigerants — Arkema, Dow Chemical and INEOS Fluor — as well as Hussmann, a provider of refrigeration equipment. Other GreenChill members include equipment suppliers Hill Phoenix and Kysor/Warren, and refrigerant makers DuPont and Honeywell. Retail participants in GreenChill so far include Food Lion, Hannaford Bros., Giant Eagle, Publix Super Markets, Whole Foods Market and Harris Teeter. The GreenChill program aims to reduce refrigerant emissions in stores and promote the use of non-ozone-depleting refrigerants and new refrigeration technology. The EPA is seeking broad participation from the supermarket industry in the program, and expects to name new food retailers in the coming weeks, said Keilly Witman, EPA spokeswoman. “We’ve now signed up most, if not all, of the main chemical and equipment suppliers, and in 2008 we want supermarkets to be the focus of our recruiting effort.”
