FMI announces webinar, conference on asset protection

Food retailers are “at the intersection of potential risks on so many fronts,” and it’s critical they develop emergency response plans, according to the association

A contentious election cycle, geopolitical strife, and civil unrest are setting the stage for potential disruptions to U.S. business, and grocery and asset protection professionals are gearing to discuss these and other topics at the annual 2024 Asset Protection & Grocery Resilience Conference in Dallas.

FMI – The Food Industry Association is holding the conference in Dallas from May 20-23 to discuss key topics such as civil unrest, theft, de-escalation, and resilience.

FMI is also co-hosting a digital seminar with asset protection firm The Power of Preparedness (TPOP) on Feb. 15 to discuss the current threat environment.

“We are all in the business of managing risk, and an important element of that is understanding the threats that pose the greatest probability and consequences,” said William Flynn, TPOP co-founder and chief content officer, in a statement.

Flynn is a former senior fellow at the George Washington University Center for Cyber and Homeland Security. He also was principal deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Office of Infrastructure Protection.

“The free session, What Today's Complex Threat Environment Means to US Businesses, including Food Retailers will highlight big picture strategic threats, those with the greatest likelihood of impacting the food retail industry, as well as preparedness recommendations and best practices,” FMI said in an announcement.

FMI said in an announcement for the events that food retailers are “at the intersection of potential risks on so many fronts,” and it’s critical they develop emergency response plans on topics such as:

  • Falling victim to organized theft campaigns
  • Establishing protocols if a local protest turns violent
  • How to deal with an active shooter scenario
