WASHINGTON -- Services were held last week for Harry Sullivan, the Food Marketing Institute's senior vice president for public affairs and general counsel, who died at age 58 following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Before joining the FMI, Sullivan worked on Capitol Hill as a legislative assistant to Rep. John R. Hauer, D-La., and also worked in the executive branch as a congressional relations officer with the Small Business Administration. In private practice, he was the Washington representative for Kroger Co., Cincinnati.

Sullivan also served more than three decades in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Reserve, holding numerous posts, including command positions. He retired as a colonel in 1992.

Sullivan, who died Sept. 19, was instrumental in launching the Food Industry Crusade Against Hunger, as legal counsel. He also encouraged others to participate in the charity.
