WESTMINSTER, Calif. — Tawa Supermarkets, which operates 21 Asian-oriented stores in California and one in Washington under the 99 Ranch Marketplace banner, said it plans to open its first store outside the West Coast — in Houston — later this year.

The company is also exploring opportunities in other Texas cities, spokesman Joseph Lee told SN yesterday.

The Houston store, at 60,000 square feet, will be one of the company's largest, he said. It will be located close to the Chinatown area in Houston, though it will be geared to all customers, Lee noted.

Published reports that Tawa has agreed to open a store on a site in Plano, Texas, are premature, he added, as no contracts have been signed.
