Bashas’ opened a remodeled Food City in Tucson, Ariz., earlier this month — a 42,000-square-foot store featuring hanging pinatas and bright wall decor in keeping with the stores’ Hispanic focus. The company operates 47 Food City locations throughout Arizona.
The store’s produce section was expanded and moved closer to the front lobby as part of the remodel.
Besides fresh spices on the wet rack against the wall, there’s an island display of dried spices including an assortment of chiles, garlic and other popular flavors.
The remodeled panaderia (bakery) showcases two new sections — self-service doughnuts and a grab-and-go case offering signature cakes in such flavors as pina colada, strawberry cream and dulce de leche — plus sugar cookies baked and packaged in the store.
The 44-foot carniceria (butcher shop) features specialized cuts of meats geared to Hispanic tastes, including skirt steak, boneless chuck and pork steaks, plus free marinades to-go and a seafood case that’s been expanded to 12 feet.
Opening in the middle of the Lenten season, the store features seasonal items in a large display area to one side of the checkstands.
The remodel included installation of a seating area in the deli section.
