Safeway Promotes Foursquare

Safeway notified its Facebook fans about a new Foursquare promotion at participating Starbucks inside its stores.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway notified its Facebook fans about a new Foursquare promotion at participating Starbucks inside its stores.

Foursquare/Starbucks "mayors" get $1 off a new "However-You-Want-It" Starbucks Frappuccino. The offer is valid though June 28.

The posting received dozens of comments, several of which were from people who apparently didn't know what Foursquare is. "What? This makes no sense," one Safeway Facebook fan wrote. "What is a foursquare mayor?" wrote another.

Others were more tech-savvy. "You become a mayor by being the person who checks in the most at a location," one person wrote. "So Starbucks/Safeway is rewarding the people who use this phone game and enjoy their products. Seems pretty fun. I hope more businesses/friends start using it."

Foursquare is a mobile phone app that rewards people for visiting places and businesses. People use their phone to "check in" from stores, parks, museums and other places to let friends know where they are. They get points and "badges" based on how often they check in. If they've been to a place more than anyone else, they are crowned the "mayor" of that place. Businesses reward these mayors with discounts and other offers.
