Extending beyond that bag of groceries, the new Market Eateries will aim to be an eating-and-drinking destination featuring local food concepts, Asian gifts and cosmetics, and prepared food from Hmart. The food hall includes two restaurant concepts by celebrated Korean chef and author Deuki Hong: a new Korean-barbecue concept called Sunday BBQ; and a second location of his fried-chicken concept Sunday Bird, which first debuted in San Francisco.
Chef Hong’s food memories of Hmart go way back, he said. “I grew up going to Hmart on weekends,” Hong recalled. “When I found out I would have the opportunity to bring my concepts there, I jumped at it! I’m so happy to be partnering with a brand that has values that truly align with my own.”
Local food vendors include Snow Monster (Taiwanese shaved ice, boba tea and waffles); MIX (Korean snack food); Momo Sushi; Sogongdong Tofu House (Korean tofu soup and comfort food); Lai Lai (authentic Chinese food); and Katsu (cutlets, omelets and pasta).
This is a Korean bakery with traditional treats and snacks.
Market Eatery will offer $10 bottle of wine and $1 beers, drink specials plus sake and fruit-flavored makgeolli, traditional Korean rice wine. After drinks are purchased, they can be enjoyed at the no-tip, “bar inspired” space (not an actual bar), called Let Them Talk.
Let Them Talk also includes a performance stage for local acts.
In addition to the food hall, Hmart has a broad selection of prepared foods.
Meat-loving Texans should find a lot to love in the grocery store’s butcher shop.
The store includes a special section for side dishes, including kimchi, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles and veggies), kimbap (rice rolls) and pajeon (savory pancakes), with recipes passed down through the Kwon family.
Korean beauty products with a cult following have their own space in the food hall.
And for a kitchen facelift, guests can pick up primo pots, pans and more.
