There might not be a hotter trend right now than plant-based items. While we’ve had plant-based meats for a while now, particularly in the burger form, there hasn’t been a deli slice option. These Plant-Powered Deli Slices from Worthington come in several varieties, including corned beef and turkey.
Paleo-driven products were definitely on trend at this year’s Expo West, and Grandcestors is releasing a new product to its line. The new item (shown cooking at left) is the New Orleans’ favorite gumbo, made with chicken, sausage, and cauliflower rice. Clear packaging (right) for the company’s meals helps show off the food.
If you haven’t heard of pinole, you aren’t alone. Pinole is an ancient grain that originated with the Aztecs. It’s a type of blue maize that is ground up and mixed with a variety of seasonings. I first tried sugar cane beverages in Egypt and the refreshing taste sure took the edge off the heat. These new products were debuted at Expo West this year in four flavors, including ginger and citrus lime. The founders said educating customers on sugar cane beverages could be a challenge, particularly with the war on sugar. But they said people are often believers after they taste the beverage, which has zero added sugars.
Spent grains from brewing beer are used in a sustainable manner to create these bars from Regrained. The bars come in several flavors, each one named for the beer from which its grains originated.
Hemp was also a hot trend at Expo West, with these Paleo-friendly burgers being just one example. One vendor said consumer education on hemp—no, it won’t make you high—has been one of the roadblocks for some. This burger line started at a food truck in Austin before progressing into grocery.

When she learned that the bee population was declining and all that bees did for the environment, she decided to put bees front and center with her Me & the Bees products.

For those consumers looking for a soda-like experience with health benefits, this Live Soda is a new option. The beverage, which tastes a bit like soda-flavored sparking water, had probiotics included with zero sugars or calories.
