Retailers Post June Sales Gains

WASHINGTON — The National Retail Federation here said warm weather, lower gas costs and strong Father's Day promotions helped drive a small boost in June retail sales, with a 0.3% gain over May's results and 5.5% over year-ago sales.

The NRF's seasonally adjusted estimate excludes autos, gas stations and restaurants, and is slightly higher than the more inclusive 0.1% June gain reported by U.S. Commerce Department on Thursday. The Commerce Department said year-over-year sales, including auto, gas stations and restaurants, were up 8.4%.

"With the summer season well under way, retailers are hoping this momentum continues through the back-to-school season," said NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz. "Knowing that shoppers remain concerned about the economy, companies have already begun offering aggressive promotions to entice shoppers."
