Nugget Markets, a supermarket chain serving the greater Sacramento, Calif., area, is merchandising its products to fit each customer’s lifestyle, no matter what it is. Prolific shelf tags identify 14 “lifestyle diets” popular to today's consumer — from dairy-free, sugar-free and heart-healthy to non-GMO, raw food and fair trade.

President and CEO Eric Stille told SN that more than half of Nugget’s 45,000 SKUs “carry one or more dietary descriptions.”
Organic was one of the original four designations, along with local, gluten-free and low-sodium.
Nugget’s “lifestyle” program calls out such differentiating factors as California-grown and imported, and vegetarian and vegan.
Stille says that Nugget customers “can buy 100% organic or 100% gluten-free or any combination of conventional and specialty products.”
Gluten-free and local products are in high demand at the Northern California chain of 12 upscale Nugget stores and 3 price-impact/specialty hybrids.
