14 retailer, distributor initiatives to support sustainability in 2020

From reducing emissions and eliminating single-use plastics to local sourcing, fighting food waste and more, the grocery industry continued to make great strides to support sustainability and the environment in 2020.

Walmart, for example, announced it is doubling down on addressing the growing climate crisis by targeting zero emissions across the company’s global operations by 2040. The retail giant and its Walmart Foundation are also committing to help protect, manage or restore at least 50 million acres of land and 1 million square miles of ocean by 2030 to help combat the cascading loss of nature threatening the planet.

Meanwhile, Kroger unveiled a new sustainable packaging commitment for its Our Brands private-label portfolio, increased investment in minority- and women-owned businesses and reduced retail food waste in its 2020 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report. The retailer also continues to ramp up its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative.

Here are 14 times that retailers and distributors showed their commitment to improving the earth in 2020.
