Of that figure, $967.3 million was spent in supermarkets. However, that number shows a 3.27% decline in dollar sales for the category. Dollar sales of internal analgesics declined 1.86% in calendar year 2003, and prior to that declined 3.65% in 2002.

The majority of internal analgesic sales came from tablets, which accounted for $857.5 million for the most recent 52 weeks, a decline of 3.19%. Analgesic liquids had sales of $88.4 million for the same time period, a decline of 2.14%. Feminine pain relievers experienced the largest drop within the category, falling 10.58% to $21.4 million in dollar sales for the most recent 52-week period.

The drug channel, by comparison, has grown its dollar sales marginally each year: 3.2% in 2003 and 3.43% in 2002. Drug stores marginally dominated the category with just over a billion in sales for both those time frames.
