Valu here said Jean Roch Vachon, its chairman and chief executive officer since 1990, is stepping down from those positions. However, Vachon will continue as chairman of the executive committee and will remain a director and shareholder. Succeeding him as chairman will be Ron Burkle, chairman of Yucaipa Cos., Los Angeles, which acquired the 28-store chain in June 1994. Succeeding Vachon as chief executive officer will be David Green, who has been president and chief operating officer of the company since 1991. Green retains the president's title; the company does not plan to name a successor to the chief operating officer post.

Three Executives Appointed at AWG

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Associated Wholesale Grocers here has completed three top management changes.

Doug Carolan was named chief operating officer, a new position.

He joined AWG in 1983 and most recently was executive vice president in charge of merchandising and marketing, real estate, store development, in-store marketing, store engineering and the legal department. He reports to Mike DeFabis, president and chief executive officer of AWG.

Tom Williams was named executive vice president of division operations, also a new position. He is in charge of three divisions -- Kansas City, Kan.; Springfield, Mo., and Oklahoma City.

Williams joined AWG in 1984 as senior vice president and Kansas City, Kan., division manager. He reports to Carolan.

Jerry Barber succeeds Williams as senior vice president and Kansas City, Kan., division manager. He also reports to Williams.

Barber most recently was president and chief executive officer of Eagle Food Centers, Milan, Ill.

Hannaford Realigns Senior VPs

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. here has realigned its management team.

Ronald Hodge was named senior vice president of Northeast operations, a new title.

As senior vice president of the Western division, his most recent title, he was responsible for operations in New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Hodge, who joined Hannaford in 1980, is now in charge of operations in Maine as well.

He assumes the duties previously performed by Robert Dunton, who has retired after 35 years with Hannaford. Dunton held the title of senior vice president of retail operations for Maine.

He held various positions at Hannaford before assuming his most recent post in 1981.

Paul Fritzson, formerly senior vice president of marketing, was named senior vice president of marketing, merchandising and distribution, also a new title.

He joined Hannaford in 1987 as a financial analyst and has held a number of different positions during his tenure, including director and vice president of retail operations for Hannaford's northern and southern market territories. Robert Anicetti, formerly senior vice president of retail operations, has been named senior vice president and general manager of Southeast retail operations. Anicetti, who joined the company in 1980, is responsible for Hannaford's expansion into new Southeastern markets, as well as acquisitions in these new markets.

Hodge, Fritzson and Anicetti all report to Hugh Farrington, Hannaford's president and chief executive officer.
