NEWS WATCH: UNITED NOMINATES TWO RETAILERS FOR 2004 BOARD

WASHINGTON -- The United Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association has nominated a pair of retailers to serve on the organization's board of directors for two-year terms, starting next month. WASHINGTON -- The United Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association has nominated a pair of retailers to serve on the organization's board of directors for two-year terms, starting next month. Glen Barnhouse, director of produce merchandising and procurement, Kroger Co., Cincinnati, heads Kroger's buying operations in Blue Ash, Ohio, and its Wesco buying and inspection operations in Vero Beach, Fla.; Fresno, Calif.; Los Angeles; Wenatchee, Wash.; and McAllen, Texas. United also nominated Mark Hilton, vice president of produce and floral, Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Charlotte, N.C. Hilton has been with the chain for 11 years, and is responsible for development and implementation of the company's produce and floral merchandising strategy, procurement, and promotional and marketing plans. To head the board as chairman, United nominated Lawrence Kern, the newly appointed president and chief executive officer of Ready Pac Produce, Irwindale, Calif. Kern joined Ready Pac on April 1, following an 11-year career with the Dole Food Co.
