HINESBURG, Vt. — Hannaford Bros. said Friday that it plans to build a new Hannaford Supermarket & Pharmacy here that will seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

The 35,000-square-foot supermarket would be Scarborough, Maine-based Hannaford Bros.' third LEED store, after opening Gold LEED supermarkets in Augusta, Maine, last year and in Duanesburg, N.Y., in June of this year.

The store is planned as part of a development called the Giroux Commercial Subdivision.

To qualify for LEED status under the U.S. Green Building Council program, supermarkets must tally a minimum number of "points" for employing certain energy-saving and environmentally friendly systems and construction practices.
