Kroger to Raise Funds for Children's Hospitals

CINCINNATI — Kroger Co. here said Friday it is launching a fund-raising campaign on behalf of children's hospitals in several divisions, encompassing Ralphs Grocery Co. stores in Southern California, Food 4 Less locations in Southern California, southern Nevada and the Greater Chicago area and Foods Co. stores in Northern Callfornia.

The company said the stores will place canisters at their checkstands through May 19 so customers and associates can donate spare change that will be donated to a variety of children's hospitals in each area.

According to Donna Giordano, president of Ralphs, "We cannot think of a better way to invest in our communities than by giving families and children hope through our support of the outstanding work these hospitals are doing to provide world-class medical care for children."

According to Kroger, the Ralphs, Foods 4 Less and Foods Co. chains have combined to raise more than $2.2 million since 2005 for children's hospitals.

I am all for helping children in need, Kroger should pony up and donate, maybe to the families of the 50+ Ralph's and Food 4 Less drivers that have been laid off starting before Christmas until now and more to come. I hope everyone give to help the kid's, and there families, but asking customers and associates for there money, supplying a place for the can! Hey Kroger OPEN UP YOUR WALLET SPEND SOME OF THOSE FAT STACKS OF CASH.......

The effort is admirable by the tactic is old and tired. Perhaps someone at Ralphs should wake up and realize that a very small percentage of transactions at retail(and I assume Ralphs is not immune to this) are cash. Consumers are paying by credit due to economic challenges and by debit to simplify the transaction, keep track of spending etc.
Safeway gets it. The ability to add donations to their order, round up etc., is much more consistent with consumer habits and providing convenience.
Both need to consider how to bring their brand and vendors together for true caused based programs.

I think this a great way to donate to a VERY WORTHWHILE cause.
My daughter has been to several Childrens' Hospitals for treatments.
You can't get better care.

I don't know about people in your area, but most people in my area DO carry cash in their pockets, and DO donate to these cans.

Perhaps it would a be a good idea to also give the customer the ability to add a donation to their Debit/Credit Card transactions (per the reply above.)
