TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has approved a bill that will help streamline the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program in the state.
It requires that the WIC Services Unit temporarily authorizes a food retailer that applies to participate in the federal WIC program at a particular site, if the applicant is currently WIC approved to operate at another site. Temporary authorization must be granted within 14 days of the completion of the initial review of the site.
The New Jersey Food Council, representing supermarkets, convenience stores, independent grocers and food distribution companies, commends Christie for signing the bill into law.
“Streamlining the process for food assistance for WIC recipients will help our neediest gain access to healthy food choices under the WIC program and prevent delays for WIC approval which can deter food retailers from investing in underserved communities,” said the NJFC, in a statement.
