EDMONTON, Alberta — The Labour Board of Alberta has issued an injunction preventing striking workers from blocking trucks at Safeway’s distribution and manufacturing centers here.
About 350 workers at a warehouse and at Safeway’s Lucerne ice cream plant went on strike Monday after workers represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 401 here voted to reject Safeway’s latest contract offer — a move made against the recommendation of the union’s president, Douglas O’Halloran.
In a message to Safeway employees, O’Halloran pledged to support the strike but predicted “a long strike that will put the survival of the Edmonton distribution center in doubt.”
According to published reports, striking workers blocked traffic in and out of the facilities Monday, prompting Safeway to seek a court injunction to curtail the activity.
