PORTLAND, Ore. — Funeral services were pending here this week for John Zupan, founder of Zupan's Markets, who died Monday following a hit-and-run accident.

Zupan, 66, was riding a motorcycle when a Honda Civic crossed the center line and hit his vehicle head-on.

Zupan's operates three upscale stores here. John Zupan turned the business over to his son, Mike, in 2000 but remained active in the company.

He began working in the grocery industry at the age of 16 as a courtesy clerk in a local market, then spent 11 years as a produce manager and produce district manager for Fred Meyer Inc., before opening his own stores.
