EXETER, Calif. -- Shoppers in certain areas of the state are paying more for fresh produce as a result of the freeze that destroyed about $1 billion worth of California produce, according to a published report. Prices for navel oranges, tangerines and avocados have jumped in recent weeks, based on a survey of some Safeway and Albertsons' stores in the Bay Area, InsideBayArea.com reported. An official with California Citrus Mutual here was quoted as saying the citrus loss this year is expected to be at least $800 million, more damaging than the devastating freeze of 1998, which erased about $700 million worth of citrus fruits.
