As the world’s largest online retailer, owner of some 500 Whole Foods Markets and the rapidly expanding Amazon Fresh grocery concept, Amazon’s approach to sustainability takes a world view.

In its recently published 2020 sustainability report, Further and Faster, Together, the Seattle-based company details its continued commitment to building a sustainable business for customers and the planet, as well its support of The Climate Pledge, a commitment co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism that calls on signatories to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.

“It’s important that large companies like Amazon stimulate investment in the development of green technologies and low-carbon products and services that will be required to help companies of all sizes decarbonize their operations. ...While we are a big company, we cannot do this alone,” the company says.

Amazon also recently expanded its Climate Pledge Friendly program, intended to make it easier for customers to discover and shop for more sustainable products in Amazon’s store. In July, Amazon added four new certification badges, including The EPA’s Safer Choice label; EWG-Verified for products that reduce chemicals of concern; Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) for food, textiles and personal care ingredients; and Animal Welfare Approved.
