GRAND UNION TO SELL DEPOT?

MONTGOMERY, N.Y. -- Grand Union Co., Wayne, N.J., is reportedly contemplating selling its 208,000-square-foot nonfood distribution center here to C&S Wholesale Grocers, Brattleboro, Vt. -- a move that would extend C&S' reach to within about 60 miles of New York City. C&S officials referred SN queries to Grand Union. A Grand Union spokesman told SN that "Grand Union intends to continue to operate that distribution center to serve our stores."

Penn Traffic disclosed earlier this month that it will withdraw from the facility in favor of a new general merchandise distribution center in Columbus, Ohio. C&S has been supplying Grand Union's 127-store Northern region in upstate New York and Vermont since Grand Union closed its Waterford, N.Y., distribution center earlier this year.
